Under the patronage of the founder of the Royal Botanic Garden of Jordan, HRH Princess Basma bint Ali, " The First Conference on the Sustainable Use of Ecosystem Services in the MENA region" was launched under the slogan "Connect- Integrate- Sustain", in the period between 10-12 October 2016, in the Dead Sea area, with the support of the German Federal Enterprise for International Cooperation (GIZ) to the Jordanian Ministry of Environment.

This conference corresponds with the awareness of the Jordanian Ministry of Environment, and the National Biodiversity Committee under the leadership of HRH Princess Basma bint Ali, towards the need to promote the value of ecosystem services in Jordan, and in the region where Jordan could take over a crucial role as a main driver for the ecosystem service approach and a regional hub for effective networking, exchange and research and a well-informed policy and biodiversity conservation in the MENA region; since the ecosystem services was rarely recognized, assessed and valued in these countries and awareness in policy and civil society in this issue was in general very low level.

The first two days offered a diverse programme with presentations from invited Jordanian researchers and keynote speakers from the region, grouped in different thematic sections while the third day consisted of a field trip organized to the participants, that demonstrated “good practice examples” for a sustainable use and management of ecosystem services in the Northern part of Jordan.
