The garden established the Rangeland Rehabilitation Program in 2007 with the aim of preserving vegetation cover and managing rangelands in partnership with the local community, working to improve the economic and social conditions of livestock herders. The program seeks to formulate an ideal, applicable model for local communities to manage natural resources sustainably, aiming to achieve biodiversity protection and community adaptation to climate change through the following objectives:

  • Activating the role of the local community in participating in environmental governance methodologies.
  • Conducting field scientific studies related to rangelands, water harvesting, and medicinal plants, and documenting traditional local knowledge.
  • Building capacities for local institutions and the community.
  • Participating in updating national laws and strategies.
  • Designing and implementing small projects for local associations in the field of sustainable use of ecosystem services.
  • Institutionalizing community work in the Tell al-Rumman area.

The results of implementing the program have been reflected positively in the following ways:

  • Improvement in the economic and social conditions of program participants from the local community.
  • Increased health awareness among the local community, especially among women.
  • Understanding within the local community of the concept and importance of institutionalizing community work in the area through support for the establishment of a charitable association and a cooperative in Tell al-Rumman.
  • Empowering women through participation in income-generating activities and small projects.

On a national level, the program's results have impacted various areas through:

  • Building capacities for many technicians from various institutions through training programs and national workshops.
  • Publishing scientific papers and booklets documenting the program's work in both a scientific and practical manner, with 12 scientific papers published and a collection of booklets discussing rangeland topics, medicinal plants, and documenting local knowledge.
  • Designing and preparing an educational environmental exhibition aimed at raising environmental awareness among students and local communities.
  • Participating in updating national laws and strategies related to rangelands, biodiversity, environment, and agriculture.
  • Participating in two global awards and reaching the final stages towards winning.
